Image: Arlington Memorial Amphitheater - completed - 1921
Description: Photograph of the east front of the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States in 1921, shortly after its completion. The retaining wall with false niches would be replaced in 1929-1930 by monumental stairs leading down to the formal gardens (in the foreground). The road running due east to the retaining wall would also be removed at that time, in favor of a long quadrangle of grass framed by beech hedges and sidewalks. These changes would be made as part of the alterations made for the installation of the final Tomb of the Unknowns in 1931.
