Description: Victory Monument is situated in Ratchathewi district at the centre of Thailand Route 1, between Ratchawithi road and Phaya Thai road. It was constructed in order to commemorate the bravery of 59 officers and civilians who died during a dispute between Thailand and France and to place their ashes. The dispute was about a request by Thailand to the French government for reconsidering the demarcation of the border line between Thailand and Indochina, but the request was refused. Since then, the conflict had been increasingly intense before ending on 28th January, 1941 through a peace talk led by Japan. The monument was made from reinforced concrete and was designed in the shape of five 5 bayonets clasped together, measuring 50 metres in height. The bayonet-shaped structure is surrounded by a sculpture of 5 heroes, representing an army officer, a naval officer, an air force officer, a police office, and a civilian, respectively. Under the sculptures, there is a bronze plate inscribed the name of those who died during the dispute. The structure was designed by M.L. Poum Malakoul, but the figures round the monument were designed and sculptured by Professor Silpa Bhirasri.
