Description: Banksia recurvistylis is a stout shrub growing 1-2 m high by 2-3 m wide with yellow flowers in October and November. During December 2003 we first found a population of this growing in the Wandering Conservation Park. Initially it resembled Banksia meganotia but with further observations other floral characters became evident. During summer 2008 we located a number of new populations on steep hilly landscapes around granite outcrops in the Monadnocks Conservation Park, Wandering. These were brought to the attention of Kevin Thiele, Western Australian Herbarium, who recognised that our plant collections could be a new entity of Banksia. So this shrub was given an informal phrase name: Banksia sp. Wandering (F & J Hort 3181), now a step closer to the naming process. In 2009, Kevin Thiele formally described this as Banksia recurvistylis, a new species for Western Australia. This has a Priority 2 conservation coding and is monitored before and after scheduled burn events. Fred and Jean Photo: Jean
