Description: Beale's Cut at Fremont's Pass in 1872, improving the El Camino Viejo route by cutting through the northeastern Santa Susana Mountains, in Southern California. Replaced later by the Newhall Tunnel (1910), and Newhall Pass interchange (1970s) in the northernmost San Fernando Valley. Note: Beale's Cut was not actually part of the 1920s Ridge Route, and was just to the south.
