Description: One of the earliest illustrations of the Bellot Strait, which was included in McClintock's published account of his 1857-1859 expedition to the Arctic. The expedition spent a significant amount of time just east of the strait, and made several attempts to pass through the strait with its ship Fox. Some attempts reached the western end, but persistent pack ice turned back the ship each time. Depicted in the image is one of the attempts, with the south coast of Somerset Island to the right, the Murchison Promontory of the Boothia Peninsula to the left, and a rowboat of the expedition navigating the northern bank of the strait.
