Description: The LBJ Presidential Library and the University of Texas at Austin’s Dolph Briscoe Center for American History co-hosted a discussion with Bill Richardson in the LBJ Auditorium on Tuesday, February 9, 2016. Richardson has led a distinguished public service career as a U.S. congressman (1982-1996), U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (1997-1998), and U.S. Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton (1998-2000). He also served as governor of New Mexico for two terms, from 2003-2011. As a diplomat and special envoy, Richardson engaged in negotiations with Fidel Castro of Cuba, Saddam Hussein of Iraq, the Taliban terrorist group, two generations of North Korean leadership, and many more of the world’s most infamous dictators. He won the release of hostages and American servicemen in North Korea, Cuba, Iraq, and the Sudan. In 2008, Richardson ran for president but dropped out after the Iowa caucus and the Democratic primary in New Hampshire. He has taught at several universities, including Harvard, Columbia, and Tufts, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
