Description: Balloon Car 702 at the Lakeside Depot. English Electric "Balloon" car 702 originally entered service with Blackpool Corporation as an open top streamliner numbered 239 in September 1934. Along with Blackpool’s other open topped trams, 239 was converted to a totally enclosed car in 1942 making it suitable for all year round use, as there was no work for open topped vehicles during the war and there was a shortage of available enclosed double deckers. The tram received its new fleet number of 702 when the full fleet was renumbered in 1968. It has operated with snowploughs, most recently on March 12th 2006. In its last few years it has been used as a reserve tram, seeing only occasional use. In May 2010, Balloon 702 was loaned to the Museum of Museums at Trafford and, following a period of storage from November 2011, was transferred to Heaton Park on 29th April 2014. Unfortunately, having spent the last couple of years stored outside 702 will require some remedial work before it can be considered for operation. This photograph was taken outside the Lakeside depot during the tramway’s “Blackpool Themed Weekend” in April 2015.
