Description: Obverse of a Brazilian 5000 cruzado banknote overstamped with a value of 5 cruzados novos. The cruzado novo replaced the cruzado as Brazil's currency at a rate of 1:1000 in January 1989. The initial cruzado novo banknotes were 1000, 5000, and 10,000 cruzado banknotes overstamped with their value in cruzados novos (1, 5, and 10 cruzados novos, respectively). The banknote features Brazilian artist Candido Portinari on both sides. The dark, vertical line is a plain security thread embedded in the paper. The line is visible even without backlighting and appears in this scan about the same as it does when the bill is placed on a dark surface.
