Description: Burnt Orchid (Orchis ustulata) Burnt Orchids are one of our smaller orchids, with a maximum height of 6 inches, and often much shorter (as here - compare the Birds Foot Trefoil flowers behind). They occur in short calcareous grassland, with a few sites in Wiltshire (as here), Hampshire and East Sussex holding the biggest colonies. The reference to "burnt" in the name refers to the coloured tip, which supposedly has the appearance of scorching - in the past they were known as Burnt Tip Orchids, for that reason.
