Description: CNR Snow Plough 55229 pushes snow from the railway tracks. They are pushed forward by the locomotive of the train. This particular plow was constructed in 1927 and has been preserved by the Saskatchewan Railway Museum as of the year 2000. The snow plow front blades can be raised and lowered. There are also wings to the side of the snow plow directing snow banks out and away from the train passing on the tracks. The snow plow flanger and foreman within all this blowing snow, had to be able to adjust wings and blades when there were obstacles to the side of the tracks or train crossings to go over. The spring 1996 edition of the Prairie Switcher the newsletter of the Saskatchewan Railroad Historical Society (editor P.J. Kennedy) tells of the experiences of Art Vessey. His father was plough and flanger foreman. Prairie snow ploughs have a roof overhang over the snow blades to help the snow plow flanger and foreman operate the snow plow with less obstructed visibility. Snow ploughs used in the mountains out west did not have an overhang.
