Description: Tropical fire ants (Solenopsis geminata) get their name from their powerful sting. They are rapidly spreading across northern Australia. Tropical fire ants are one of the four most serious pest ant species in northern Australia, along with Yellow Crazy ants Anoplolepis gracilipes, African Big-headed ants Pheidole megacephala, and Singapore ants Monomorium destructor. CSIRO is currently working to eradicate tropical fire ants on the Tiwi Islands north of Darwin.
