Description: The Winnipeg Grenadiers at Hong Kong on the day of their arrival, 16 November 1941 (pictured), after spending 20 days on HMT Awatea, departed from Vancouver on 27 October. Under sealed orders, most did not know their port of destination until arriving Hong Kong. The Canadian politicians and military expected these troops would see only garrison (non-combat) duty,[1] however, within three weeks of arrival, the Battle of Hong Kong began. The commander of the Winnipeg Grenadiers was L. Col. John Louis Robert Sutcliffe (August 29, 1898, Elland, England - April 6, 1942, Hong Kong).[2] Photo Courtesy Imperial War Museum, London.
