Douglas by Confederate soldiers at his home on Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865). Douglas had displayed an American flag, and had defended the flag from pro-secessionists. The engraving was published in William "Parson" Brownlow's book, Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession.
