Description: Cherkley Court. Cherkley Court was built c 1870. It was rebuilt in 1893 in the style of a French chateau after fire damage. In 1910 it was bought by William Aitken, the 1st Lord Beaverbrook, soon after he entered parliament. Many famous guests were entertained here by Lord Beaverbrook, including Rudyard Kipling, Harold Macmillan and Winston Churchill. It has been extensively restored by the Beaverbrook Foundation and the gardens are now open to the public, with the house available for private functions. See http://www.cherkleycourt.com/index.htm.
