Description: Clock Tower, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. This view shows the Clock Tower building and part of the 'wing' running off to its right. A similar 'wing' used to run off to its left when then the building was built (in 1878) and opened (in 1881) as the Sheffield Union Workhouse. The Clock Tower building was the main entrance - for staff and visitors, but (presumably) not for the inmates. The whole building was a quarter of a mile in length. The Clock Tower building is in use as offices and as an Art Gallery / Display Area and as such is open to the public. Other than part being a Staff Gymnasium ... I'm not sure what the 'wing' is used for ... probably offices. The Staff Car Park was mostly empty as it was a Sunday! 1078477 1078488
