Description: Mark the Evangelist, image 21 of the Codex Aureus of Lorsch or Lorsch Gospels, presumably written in the scriptorium of the Lorsch Abbey (Hofschule Karls des Großen), Germany. This Carolingian manuscript was stolen 1622 from the Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg, during the Thirty Years' War. In order to be easy to sell, the codex was broken in four parts: First written part - Gospels of Matthew and Mark, preliminary matter and canon tables Todays location: Batthyaneum (National) Library, Alba Iulia, Romania Second written part - Gospels of Luke and John & Ivory panels from the rear cover Todays location: Vatican Library Ivory panels from the front cover Todays location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, (Inv.-Nr. 138-1866)
