Description: SICILY, Syracuse. Gelon I. 485-478 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26.5mm, 17.33 g, 6h). Struck circa 480-478 BC. Charioteer, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left, driving slow quadriga left; above, Nike, with wings spread, flying left, crowning horses / Head of Arethousa right, wearing pearl tainia and necklace; s¨∞-A-˚o-s-5-o˜ and four dolphins around. Boehringer Series VIa, 76 (V36/R51); HGC 2, 1306 var. (obv. type right); SNG ANS 19; Bement 456; Jameson 747; Pozzi 561 (all from the same dies). Near EF, attractive cabinet tone. Fine late archaic style. Rare with obverse type left.
