Description: Description: Photograph of a coastal defense gun on a center pivot barbette mount, intended for parapet positions on the coastal fortifications of the United States as part of the Second System of Defense. This gun is a Model 1811 prototype designed by George Bomford, later Chief of Ordnance, U.S. Army. The gun is a 50-pounder Columbiad, barrel length is 74 inches, bore length is 63.5 inches. The barrel weighs 6312 pounds. A Columbiad was longer than a howitzer but shorter than a gun. This is a front view. The carriage and chassis restoration is by Paulson Brothers Ordnance of Clear Lake, Wisconsin.
