Description: A bronze statue of Countess Constance Markievicz and her cocker spaniel called Poppet, by Elizabeth McLaughlin (1998), in front of Sport & Fitness Markievicz (or Markievicz Leisure Centre, or Markievicz Pool and Gym) on Townsend Street, Dublin. In his biography of Markievicz, the writer Seán Ó Faoláin wrote that Poppet was "disliked immensely and regarded only as an old dog you'd love to root [kick], and behind her [Markievicz's] back Poppet did get an occasional root!" In The Irish Times of 21 October 2000, Robert O'Byrne wrote of McLaughlin's statue of Markievicz that it "bears almost no resemblance to the rebel Countess, it is coarsely executed, a gift shop item enlarged." As for Markievicz herself, she was a revolutionary, suffragist and government minister.
