America is just beginning to realizethe possibilities and advantages of this means of transportation andwill surely develop, before long, a system which will fit conditions. The only installation worth mentioning is that of Los Angeles,California. Figs. 22 and 23 show some pictures of the cars. Theline is about IJ miles long, runs through the Laurel Canon, andis reached via the Pacific Electric Line to Hollywood. The lineoperates at about 500 volts, the power being taken from the line ofthe above-named company. There are no turnouts on the overheadtrolleys, for the whole road is up grade and the cars use the trolleysonly when going uphill; they coast down on the return trip, regulat-ing their speed with the brakes, of which there are two, operatedseparately by foot control.
