Description: The S.S. Eastland with the S.S. Christopher Columbus in the background. The S.S. Eastland was a passenger ship based in Chicago, Illinois and used for tours. The ship was commissioned in 1902 by the Michigan Steamship Company and built by the Jenks Ship Building Company. She was involved in a famous maritime disaster, with the loss of 845 lives, in 1915. The S.S. Christopher Columbus was a whaleback excursion liner designed by Alexander McDougall and built in 1892-1893 in Superior, Wisconsin by American Steel Barge Company for service to ferry passengers to and from the World's Columbian Exposition, and later placed in general service to various excursion ports around the Great Lakes.
