Description: "Winged" lantern clock, a very early type of pendulum clock, made by British clockmaker Edward East in the late 17th century just after the invention of the pendulum clock in 1657. From a 1922 clock book. This is a lantern clock, a style of clock which predated the pendulum and originally used a foliot timekeeper, which has been converted for use with a pendulum. The early verge escapement made the pendulum swing in very wide arcs of 80° or more, so "wings" have been added to the sides to accommodate the pendulum's swing.
