Description: Grave of Edward Welsh (also known as Edward Welch) in section eight in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Welsh was born in Ireland on January 3, 1843. It is unclear when he emigrated to the United States, but he was living in Cincinatti, Ohio, when he enlisted in the Union Army at the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. On May 22, 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered an assault on the Confederate Army's positions on the heights overlooking Vicksburg, Mississippi. Volunteers were needed to build a bridge across a moat and plant scaling ladders against the enemy embankment in advance of the main attack. Welsh volunteered. He and his fellow soldiers were pinned down in the moat and unable to retreat until nightfall. Of the 150 men in the storming party, 71 were killed. The 79 survivors each received the Medal of Honor. Edward Welsh died in Washington, D.C., on February 1, 1929, and was interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
