Description: Quartz vial (9 mm diameter) containing ~300 micrograms of Es-253 solid. The illumination produced is a result of the intense radiation from Es-253, which alpha decays (6.6 MeV, 1000 watts/g) with a half-life of 20.5 days. The heat and radiation accompanying decay often generate detrimental effects in studies of Es.
