Description: Elbaite Locality: Tourmaline Queen Mine (MS 6458; Tourmaline Queen No. 3), Tourmaline Queen Mountain (Pala; Queen), Pala District, San Diego County, California, USA (Locality at mindat.org) Size: 5.1 x 4.8 x 4.4 cm. This equant, intensely colored crystal is from the famous Green Cap Pocket of 1988, collected by John McLean working for Pala International. This is the crystal they kept for their own collection, amidst only a dozen or so good singles of this size. These crystals, in person, have a more intense green cap and sharp definition of color bands than some seemingly similar material found at the Himalaya Mine (which is duller in color and has a less defined cap). Also, these tend to be more stout and fat, as you see here, than Himalaya "green caps." Weighs 225 grams. Ex. Pala International/William Larson Collection.
