Description: Fishbourne Roman Palace. The northern half of the gardens (seen beyond the pergola) have been recreated following the original design with low box hedging. The vine bearing pergola lies to the south in an area containing a display of medicinal and culinary herbs with notes as to their use in ancient times. The wonderful mosaics (see 19254 for an example) in the north wing are protected by the building in the background (undergoing repairs in the summer of 2005, hence the scaffolding) The A259 cuts through the south wing of the villa but the recreated formal garden in the courtyard gives some idea of the original size of this important building - covering about 4 hectares (10 acres).
