Description: This photograph shows the blast furnace area of the Fitzroy Iron Works at Mittagong, N.S.W. Australia. The photograph's date is unknown but must be between 1875 and 1938 (based on photographer's working life). It must be before 1913 as other photographs show that the buildings surrounding the blast furnace had been demolished by that date. The furnace is the large sandstone structure on the left hand side. The trestle used to access the furnacce top is visible. The 'two stoves' are visible in front of the furnace; one is rectangular and has a brick chimney - the one added by John Kay Hampshire - and the other cylindical - the one added by Thomas Trevick. Note the large inclined metal pipe that carried furnace off-gases to the boiler house. This is connected to the vertical downcomer pipe added by Thomas Trevick.
