Description: Locust plague of 1915, flamethrower used to exterminate locusts. After the locusts have been herded into the metal pit, fire is applied gratuitously to the pile using flamethrowers such as the one pictured here in order to exterminate the swarm before it can take flight and wreak havoc on the countryside. The image was taken in or around Palestine between March and October 1915.
