Description: Flowers open in succession in flower head of a sunflower. Sharp objects of the picture from left to right: 1. Sterile ray flowers. Every ray ("big petal") is composed of fused petals of a ray flower. These flowers have no stamens and pistil. 2. 2-lobed hairy stigmas of disc flowers (female phase). Stigma is pushed through the dark anther tube by its elongated style. 3. Opened anthers (brown) of disc flowers with yellow pollens (male phase). Distinct filaments under the fused anthers, and 5-lobed corolla of disc flowers can be seen, too. Disc flowers open in succession. The picture also shows the faded (near the ray flowers) and the unopened central flowers (on the right side of the picture).
