Description: Listed as a Michigan Historic Site, the picture shows where the Fox Indian Massacre took place. It is the only battle held within the city of Grosse Pointe. When Cadillac established the city of Detroit in 1701, he built Fort Ponchatrain. Fort Ponchatrain was very admired by the British because it was the perfect passage to enter the Upper Great Lakes. The English wanted to take the fort for themselves. In the spring of 1712, an opportunity arose for the English to take the fort. The French commander was away from the fort at the time and the English united with the Fox Indians to gain control. Frowned upon by both Huron and Ottawa Indians, the Fox Indians abandoned the mission. The French still attacked the Fox Indians and over 1,000 were killed in a very violent struggle that lasted 5 days. Soon after the battle, the French started to settle the City of Grosse Pointe.
