Description: 1974 sculpture of Lewis Silkin by Franta Belsky. Silkin was Minister of Town and Country Planning from 1945 to 1950 and appointed a New Town Committee in 1945 to formulate plans for the construction and development of self-contained and balanced communities for work and living. In 1946, Stevenage Borough, which had a population of 6,237, was designated as the site of the first New Town and the Stevenage Development Corporation was created. The sculpture is located on the West face of the clock tower (facing towards the bus station).
