Description: View of a General Electric Superfund cleanup site in Pittsfield. Massachusetts. Housatonic River, "1/2 Mile Removal" site, cleanup Cell B: Excavation of sediments, GE Plant on right; Hibbard Playground on left. GE's Pittsfield complex was extensively contaminated with PCBs and other chemicals between the 1930s and 1970s, and subsequently was designated as a "Superfund" cleanup site by US EPA in 1997. EPA and GE began a massive cleanup of this site on the Housatonic River in 1999. Cleanup in the 1/2 Mile Removal area was completed in 2002. (Note: The date displayed in lower right corner of photo is incorrect.)
