Description: The Buddha (you can see the remains of his hand on the right side of this fragment) is evidently explaining the teachings to his five core disciples. The pillar is an instructional device. "The Four Noble Truths," the Buddha's essential teachings, constitute a "Wheel of the Law." (The first Truth is that life is inherently unsatisfying.) This wheel should be turned three times - once to show that each Truth has been heard, once to show that each has been understood, and once to show that each has been acted upon.
