Description: Celestial Globe, Isfahan (?), Iran, 1144. Signed Yunus b.al-Husayn al-Asturlabi. Shown at the Louvre Museum. Engraved bronze inlaid with silver. A spherical astrolabe is a three dimensional model of the universe for observation and measurement. This globe, the 3rd oldest surviving in the world, shows the 48 constellations identified by the Greec Ptolemy in Alexandria. The 1025 stars are represented by silver dots that vary in size according the the observed brightness of each one. The inscription states that Yunus recalculated the coordinates taking into account the lapse of time between Ptolemy's work and his own
