Description: The inscription on the rear of the gravestone of Elliot Charles Bovill (1848? – 24 March 1893), Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements, which was relocated from the Bukit Timah Cemetery to the north-east corner of Fort Canning Green, Singapore. The inscriptions on the gravestone read: "(left side) TO THE MEMORY OF / ELLIOT CHARLES BOVILL KNIGHT BACHELOR / CHIEF JUSTICE OF THIS COLONY // (front) DIED OF CHOLERA / CONTRACTED / WHILE ON DUTY / MARCH 24 1893 / AGED 45 // (right side) THIS STONE WAS PLACED BY HIS / BROTHER JUDGES, THE BAR AND / THE OFFICERS OF THE SUPREME / COURT OF THE STRAITS SETTLEMENTS // (rear) JUSTUM ET TENACEM PROPOSITI VIRUM [a man just and steadfast in purpose: Horace, Odes, III.3]": see Alan Harfield (1988) Early Cemeteries in Singapore, London: British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia, p. 301 ISBN: 978-0-907799-19-1.
