Description: Compass stand from the bridge of HMAS Sydney (1912), installed at Port Macquarie, New South Wales in 1929. Notes: The concrete block is beside the town beach. Sydney was decommissioned in 1928, hence the eretion at Port Macquarie in 1929 is consistent. Inscription: Compass Stand from Bridge of HMAS Sydney which destroyed the German Raider Emden at Cocos Island on 1914-09-09. Erected to mark the spot where Surveyor General John Oxley camped on his arrival at Port Macquarie on 1818-10-08 after his expedition from Bathurst, down the Macquarie River, over the New England range, and down the Hastings River.
