Description: A costume sketch of canary chicks for the ballet Trilby by J. Gerber. It inspired Mussorgsky for his Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks from The Pictures at the Exhibition. The exhibition catalogue described the sketch: “Canary chicks, enclosed in eggs as in suits of armor. Instead of headdress, canary heads put on like helmets down to the neck.” Watercolor 17.6 x 25.3 cm. Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House), Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg.
