The cannon-ading shook the earth where we were. The Union forces weredriven back by the Confederates under General Albert SidneyJohnston. The surgeons gave us orders to prepare for tremendouswoik, but none of us had any idea of what the battle would mean for thehospital corps. At about ten oclock the wounded began arriving at ourhospital tents in the rear of the army of the Ohio, under the command ofGeneral Sherman. We had labored like beavers for five hours makingready, as far as possible, for expeditious work, when the wounded soldiersbegan to come.
