Unlike the IUCN map, this map doesn't show "possibly extinct" areas as the literature doesn't consider these areas for possible distribution of stable whio populations. Even though that IUCN marks Tararuas in orange (meaning "extant / resident"), from this map the mountain range has been deleted as whio hasn't been residing in Tararuas for decades The map now shows similar distribution as Handbook of Australian, New Zealand & Antarctic Birds, see the sources below
