Description: The John Cox Cottage on Broadview Avenue in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood. Built in 1807, it is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited dwelling in Toronto. At the time of its construction, 200-acre parcels of land were granted to farmers with the goal of creating farms that could grow food to supply the settlement of York. John Cox got the parcel of land next to John Scadding’s and built this south-facing log cabin. When built, it would have looked out over rolling land freshly cleared of forest, and mud tracks instead of roads. Most farm cottages of that era burned down or were knocked down by new landowners as the city expanded.
