Description: From "The Feeding of London:, The Leisure Hour, London 1889. The landing has ben made at low tide; drovers drive sheep up a gangplank onto one of the market's three massive piers. Drovers wore special protective clothing which was sterilised after use. The market was instituted to prevent the importation of disease. No animal was allowed to leave it alive.
