Image: Lead seal of Mu'awiya's dismissal of Ibn Amir, ca. 664
Description: A lead seal with Kufic Arabic inscription that transliterates as: mimma ‘amara bi-hi/amir al-mu’minin/Mu’awiya bi-‘azl a/l-amir ‘Abd Allah bin ‘A/mir min wilaya fi-/al-Basra, which translates as "among those things ordered by the Commander of the Faithful Mu’awiya to dismiss the Amir ‘Abd Allah bin ‘Amir from the rule of al-Basra." The inscription refers to the dismissal by Caliph Mu'awiya I (r. 661-680) of Abd Allah ibn Amir from the governorship of Basra, which the Muslim traditional sources place in c. 664 CE. Along with another lead seal with the same inscription, this seal is the only known surviving object inscribed in Arabic that dates to Mu'awiya's reign.
