The canal, constructed between 1953 and 1955, is 24 metres (78.7 ft) wide and 570 metres (1,870 ft) long with a single Seaway-max lock to account for tidal differences; "Seaway- max" means that any vessel capable of transiting the St. Lawrence Seaway will fit through the Canso Canal. The Rear Range Light on the left was built in 1963, there were two range lights but this is the only one still standing. The Front Range Light, was replaced by a skeleton tower in 1991. This light is on top of a small hill on the Cape Breton side of the Canso Causeway, and beside the Canso Canal. This is the only lighthouse located in a cemetery in Canada, and probably the world, making it very unique. This area contains six headstones for seven people. The oldest headstone is for Douce Elizabeth Belhache aged 6 years and 8 months who died on July 23, 1795. Other early settlers buried there are James and Christena Skinner, Angus and Jane Grant, Charles Fox and his daughter Mary. She died in 1880 and was the last person buried on the piece of land beside the Causeway known both as Belhache Point and MacMillan’s Point.
