Description: Llanfyllin Workhouse Central "Hub" building Llanfyllin Union Workhouse - Wyrcws Undeb Llanfyllin The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act created unions of parishes which collected rates to pay for the care of the poor and the upkeep of the workhouse built to house them. Llanfyllin is one of the best surviving examples of these buildings. The Union formed in 1837 covered a large area of north Montgomeryshire and parts of Denbighshire and served all of this area until poor law unions were abolished in 1930. The building was designed by Thomas Penson, County surveyor. It is built from local stone, lined internally with brick and roofed with slate from Llangynog. The Workhouse is now home to a unique project: a community enterprise for arts, education, environment and heritage. Work continues to restore the building. The workhouse has its own website Link which includes an interesting history section.
