Image: Macquarie perch
Description: Macquaria australasica A highly endangered Macquarie perch. This exceptionally large specimen was caught on a lure fitted with barbless hooks (visible in the picture) in a high altitude upland river dominated by introduced Trout species and was carefully released. The Macquarie perch is now extinct in most of its upland river habitats due to the total domination of these upland river habitats by introduced Trout species. Gross siltation from agricultural practices and flow regulation and thermal pollution by dams have also caused the extinction of Macquarie perch in some upland rivers.
