The watershed of Malibu Creek is largely protected wohtin units od the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "It looks like it's sometimes a pretty substantial stream, but this year — one of the driest in California's recorded history — it's mostly dried up on surface flow. Nonetheless, some pools remain – to swimmers' delight."
