Description: Pinckney Marcius-Simons, The Young Lulli, by 1888, photogravure from the book Recent ideals of American Art by Geoerge William Sheldon, Publisher D. Appleton & Co., 1888. "In childhood Lulli [Jean-Baptiste Lully, born Giovanni Battista Lulli], a Florentine peasant-lad, was sent to France to act as buffoon to Madame de Montpensier; but, on his arrival at her house, the lady was so displeased with his lack of personal beauty that she sent him to live with the servants in the kitchen. Here he amused his humble listeners with improvisations on the violin, the strains of which one day came to the ears of his distinguished mistress, and so charmed her that she…at once took the trouble to present young Lulli to the king, an act which laid the foundations of his success as a composer. Mr. Simons has chosen the moment when Madame de Montpensier first hears the boy playing on his violin, unconscious of the presence of his distinguished listener and future patron."
