Портрет М.К.Тенишевой 1896 «И каждый мой новый портрет неизменно сопровождался неприятностями, но я опять и опять позировала по просьбе Репина, неутомимо споря с ним из-за позы и безбожной безвкусицы в выборе кресла, на которое я должна опираться или сидеть. Всё-таки мне не удалось избежать буковой качалки – идеал Репина. На которую я неминуемо попала на одном углевом этюде. Кроме меня, он написал ещё композитора Кюи в этом же нелепом кресле, Дузе и ещё нескольких человек всё на тех же тонетовских или венских качалках. Не понимаю, что они ему так дались?» Тенишева. Впечатления моей жизни.
