Description: Model of the proposed Washington, D.C., approaches to the Arlington Memorial Bridge. The Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway enters from the bottom, center. Constitution Avenue proceeds to the upper left from the bottom-center traffic circle. A grand plaza with fountain occupies the spot east of the Lincoln Memorial, and links to the traffic circle surrounding the memorial. Ohio Drive Southwest exits the plaza through a heavily forested area near the top of the image (just right of center). A "watergate" of steps extends down from the east plaza to the Potomac River. The bridge, with its tall pylons and statuary atop each pier, extends to the right. This model can be dated to 1926. The Arlington Memorial Bridge Commission proposed placing the parkway in an underpass beneath the bridge in 1927. The proposed plan for these eastern approaches would be significantly altered for aesthetic and budgetary reasons by the time construction began in 1928.
