Description: Monmouth Priory Gate The National Lottery's Heritage Fund has been put to good use in the restoration of the priory in order for it to serve as a community building. Now used for lectures, training events, weddings etc, the priory was founded in 1070 AD by Benedictine Monks and its church, now St Mary's Church, was dedicated in 1101 AD. Traditionally the Priory was connected with Geoffrey of Monmouth whose 'History of the Kings of Britain' chronicles the coming of Christianity, the departure of the Romans and the legends of King Arthur. The building has a beautiful oriel window with castellated battlements and is known as Geoffrey's Window. The Priory has a large and specialist collection of theological books , freely available to the Diocese as a resource. Situated in Priory Street, above the River Monnow.
